Astley's is My Goto Blend
This is a quality Virginia broken flake tobacco that has been my goto blend for months now.
When you first open the tin, you will notice a fruity smell of hay and raisins with no noticeable casing, with the broken flakes stacked into an interesting pattern. It is not too moist, but I like to dry it just a tad more before loading, rub it out further, and load into a small stacked pipe, with a chamber .75” x 1.25 – 1.7” tall. The small diameter chamber really focuses the flavors and stoves the tobacco as the smoke progresses, cooking the tobacco beneath to mellow and deepen the flavors as you smoke. In a larger pipe, it just becomes more salty and muddled in flavor to me, missing a lot of the bright flavors.
Upon, putting the match to it, it has a honey sweet flavor, with a touch of lemony citrus. About one-third of the way down starts some of the Earl Grey tea flavors, and then it starts cooking into a mellow, nutty, salty, sweet smoke close to the bottom.
Afterwards, I notice a taste on my teeth for the rest of the day, which is the best part of this tobacco. It reminds me of this blend, and makes me crave it until I can get another bowl.
It is medium in strength and mild in flavor, of which I enjoy best indoors. No tongue bite experienced.
I enjoy this one best with medium roast Arabica coffee blend.
